Delete: The message is deleted when its SCL value equals or exceeds this threshold. No notification is sent to the originating email server. If the SCL value is lower than the Delete threshold, compare it to the Reject threshold. Reject: The message is deleted, and Exchange sends a rejection response (DSN) to the originating email server when the SCL value equals or exceeds the Reject threshold. The intention behind returning a DSN to the sender is to advise him that his message seems to be spam and so allow a legitimate sender to adjust the content and resend (or ask for his name to be added to a safe senders list). Setting effective SCL thresholds is a balance between achieving a high level of protection against spam (users complain very quickly when they begin to receive large volumes of spam) and avoiding false positives . In addition, it does not make sense to set the quarantine threshold so high that vast quantities of messages end up in the quarantine mailbox waiting for an administrator to review and decide whether to pass the message on to the addressee . Some trial and error is likely before you arrive at a balance that makes sense for the organization .

At a more granular level, you can dictate SCL thresholds on a per-mailbox basis with the Set-Mailbox cmdlet. You might want to do this for users who complain that they receive a large volume of spam. This value is maintained through the Set-OrganizationConfig cmdlet. For example, after this command is executed, mailbox servers will move any message with an SCL value greater than 5 into the Junk E-Mail folder:

It s possible to set a specific threshold for a mailbox using the Set-Mailbox cmdlet. For example:

It s also possible to mark a mailbox to be ignored during anti-spam processing by enabling its AntiSpamBypassEnabled property . Any message addressed to a mailbox with this property set to $True bypasses the Content Filter agent . To avoid a deluge of spam arriving into the mailbox, administrators often set the R equireSenderAuthenticationEnabled property, which means that the mailbox won t accept messages from senders who do not authenticate themselves to Exchange . This can be an effective way of blocking spam from mailboxes used by company executives at the expense that messages from third parties that might be of interest to the executive won t be delivered if they are not authenticated . One way around this is to create two mailboxes per executive, one with a public email address that is monitored by an assistant, and one for internal communications that is moderated and won t accept messages from nonauthenticated senders . Here s the command to lock down a mailbox:
